Delhi Rises to Hazardous Haze Following Celebrations

Tuesday brought citizens of the world's most polluted city found themselves breathing severely hazardous air that fell into the "critical" level.

Record-Breaking Air Quality Readings

Various sections of the capital registered an AQI over 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the recommended level established by the global health authority.

Particular areas, levels of toxic particulate matter hit highs of eighteen hundred, equating to 15-20x exceeding safe standards.

Pyrotechnics Restrictions and New Policy Shifts

Beginning in 2020, officials had implemented a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of pyrotechnics during Diwali due to their major role to the hazardous pollution that blankets the city as the cold season begins.

Yet recently, the newly elected city leadership petitioned the highest court to request a easing of the ban.

Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been questioned by conservation groups as being only about 30% lower impact – as a compromise between "cultural practices and public health".

Legal Verdict and Enforcement

Much to the frustration of environmental and health campaigners, the court approved the proposal, stipulating that green firecrackers could be set off during specific hours throughout the festival.

Throughout the festival evening, there was extensive flouting of the regulated periods across the metropolis, with little enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.

Several recording stations throughout the capital registered pollution peaking around midnight to some of the worst levels observed during the festival in at least three years.

Cross-Border Implications

The proliferation of pyrotechnics during Diwali also sparked a dispute with bordering the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistan's the Punjab region partially attributing deteriorating pollution levels in the city of Lahore on contaminants originating in India following the celebrations.

Persistent Environmental Crisis

Extremely elevated readings of atmospheric toxins in the capital have remained as a serious challenge for over a decade and a half, with the condition gradually deteriorating.

Near the festival period, the levels of dangerous airborne contaminants in the environment has been found to increase dramatically to 70% higher the peak levels ever recorded in Beijing, which was formerly regarded as the planet's dirtiest metropolis.

Various Pollution Contributors

The situation in Delhi is caused by a combination of different contributors including transportation pollution, dust, building projects, waste incineration and haze from crop residue ignition in neighbouring regions of Punjab and Haryana.

Within these states, rural residents regularly ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, creating dangerous pollution that then gets trapped over the capital as winter air descends.

Public Health and Economic Impact

The economic and health toll on the nearly 33 million inhabitants living in the Delhi area is enormous, according to numerous studies.

This pollution results in increased incidence of neurological, cardiovascular and breathing conditions, and can result in oncological diseases.

Air quality crisis is estimated to be causing ten thousand premature deaths each year in the capital.
